Electric vehicle sales in the US continue to see a significant uptick, with EV (BEV and PHEV) share of new light passenger vehicles (LPVs) reaching 7.05% in Q2 of 2022. This is a 0.81 percentage point increase from the 6.24% in Q1.
The growth to 7.05% in Q2 2022 is an increase of 2.9 times from the 2.44% EV sales share since the end of 2022. And in the chart below you can see that the quarter over quarter increase in sales share for both BEVs and PHEVs was roughly 13%. If the quarterly increase continues at 13% for Q3 and Q4, the Q4 sales share would reach 9.0%. While US consumers are showing a huge appetite to buy or lease EVs, the question is if automakers can meet this demand due to supply chain issues and scaling EV productions.
You can find these and other statistics and insights in our just released Excel file of sales and sales share data for every state (and District of Columbia) for Q1, Q2, and the combined H1 of 2022.
A few other insights you will find:
- In Q2 2022, three states/districts (California, District of Columbia, and Washington) have combined sales share for alternative powertrain vehicles (BEV, PHEV, FCEV, and Hybrid) of at least 25%.
- Five states had EV (BEV + PHEV) sales share in Q2 of less than 2% (Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming).
- Four states (California, Colorado, Nevada, and New Jersey) had a higher EV (BEV + PHEV) sales share in Q2 2022 than regular hybrid sales share for the state.
Uncover these and other trends in our Excel spreadsheet where you will find 2022 vehicle sales and share by type of powertrain for each US state and the District of Columbia for the following time period:
- Q1
- Q2
- H1 (Q1 + Q2)
- Q2 vs Q1 (net difference)
The file includes sales (registrations) and sales share for the following powertrain types and combinations:
- Fuel cell (FCEV)
- BEV (battery electric vehicle)
- PHEV (plug-in hybrid)
- HEV (regular, non-plug in hybrid)
- Total alternative powertrain sales (FCEV + BEV + PHEV + HEV)
- Total EV (BEV + PHEV)
- Hybrid – EV (Net difference between hybrid and EV (BEV + PHEV) sales and share)
- *Estimated ICE (internal combustion engine) sales – *calculated based on alternative powertrain sales and sales share percentages
- *Estimated total light passenger vehicle (all of the above) sales share
Cost of this file is $425.

Do you have similar figures for Vocational trucks?
David, I haven’t finished building up my commercial truck sales database, but it is planned.
